It was once protected by the Order of the Silver Dragon at Tsolenka Pass. The origins of the temple are unknown, but it is rumored that Strahd enountered an ancient evil that cursed him with vampirism and separated Barovia from the material plane.
The Amber Temple is the resting place for many of the universe's Elder Ones. Those who reside in the Amber Temple do so in blocks of amber. Those who make physical contact with an amber sarcophagus are offered a Dark Gift of enormous power, but often at a high price.
The Kavani druids of Barovia have practiced a coming-of-age ritual for generations. In order to be respected as an adult in their community, teenage druids must spend a week in the Amber Temple. It is well known that many do not survive this experience and those that do often come back with a weakened mental state. The few that come back stronger are welcomed into the highest order of the Kavani and given special privileges and responsibilities.
